The Dung Gate

Also known as Sha'ar Ha'ashpot, Gate of Silwan, Gate of Moors and Mograbi Gate. The gate is the closest to the Western Wall and the entry point for non muslims to Dome of the Rock. The name Sha'ar Ha'ashpot appears in the Book of Nehemiah: 3:13-14. It is probably named after the residue that was taken from the Jewish Temple into the Valley of Hinnom, where it was burned. Another theory puts it back to Omar's conquest of Jerusalem in 638 A.D. when trash was cleared out of the city through this gate. It is also known as the Gate of the Moors because of the North African immigrants who lived in a neighborhood next to the gate in the 16th century.
