This gate on Mt. Zion is also known as David's Gate and Jewish Quarter Gate. It was built for Suleiman the Magnificent in 1540. Zion Gate is known as David's Gate because Mount Zion is believed by some to be the burial place of King David. It has also been called the "Jewish Quarter Gate" because of its proximity to the Jewish Quarter. The stones surrounding this gate are still pockmarked by weapons fire from the Arab and Israeli battles in the 1948 War of Independence. This gate was also used by the Israel Defense Forces in 1967 to enter and capture the Old City.
