Passover Seder Plate

The Passover Seder Plate is a special plate containing 6 symbolic foods used during the Passover Seder. Each has special significance to the the story of the Exodus from Egypt. The seventh symbolic item used during the meal is a stack of three matzot covered with a white napkin and placed on the Seder table.

The 6 items are

Maror; Are the bitter herbs, symbolizing the bitterness and harshness of the slavery which the Jews endured in Egypt. For maror, grated horseradish was used.

Charoset; A sweet, brown, mixture of apple, nuts, spice and sweet red wine representing the mortar used by the Jewish slaves to build the buildings for Egyptians.

Karpas; A vegetable other than bitter herbs, usually onion, parsley, celery or cooked potato, which is dipped into salt water which represents tears as Jews worked in Egyp. We used parsley leaves

Z'roa; A roasted shank bone or chicken neck, which was roasted or boiled, symbolizing the Pesach sacrifice, which was a lamb offered in the Temple in Jerusalem.

Beitzah; A roasted egg, symbolizing the festival sacrifice that was offered in the Temple in Jerusalem and was then roasted and eaten as part of the meal on Seder night.

Chazeres; Also bitter, but was a red paste of horseradish and beet root
