St. Catherine Monastery or "Dir el-Muhraka"

According to the conventional belief of Jews, Christians, Muslims and also Druze, it is on this summit that the dramatic battle between Elijah and the 450 prophets of Baal took place (1Kings 18:38-40). "Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that [was] in the trench. And when all the people saw [it], they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he [is] the God; the LORD, he [is] the God. And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there". Today, a church resides on this place at the Carmel ridge (500m above MSL) and it belongs to the Carmelite Order. Locally known by the Arabic name "Dir el Muhraka" which means the monastery of the "place of burning". From the top of this church (a few stairs up) you can see one of the most beautiful view of Israel. You can get a bird's eye view of the most fertile part of Israel, the Jezreel Valley. On a clear day, you can observe to Lebanon, Nazareth, Galilee, Mt Tabor and Megiido……
