Herod's Gate

One of the 8 gates of Jerusalem. I missed this gate last time but could photograph this time from bus while moving towards Mt Olive. It was built in 1538-40 by Sulieman the Magnificent’s architects. The name Herod's Gate was given by pilgrims of the 16th & 17th Century, who erroneously believed that it led to Herod Antipas' palace. Decorated with a rose-like design, it is also called in Hebrew "The Gate of Flowers". It was closed until 1875. At noon on 15 July 1099, the Crusaders breached the wall at this gate to take the city of Jerusalem.
